Our good friends at Panasonic have been kind enough to offer a IEEE1394 to Edit System compatibility chart. This chart outlines some of the particular settings that may need to be applied in order for your Mini DV, DVCPRO, or DVCPRO HD deck to function properly via IEEE 1394 (Firewire) with your edit suite. While there are some holes in this chart, it is definitely a good first look when troubleshooting Firewire connections between your VTR and edit system. Please note that just because your particular VTR and edit system are not listed doesn’t mean that there’s a compatibility problem. New software and firmware patches are cranked out frequently, so make sure you have the most current updates for your software and machines. Often times, when Firewire communication between the VTR and your edit system are failing, I have found that simply initializing the VTR or re-starting the software after changes have been made remedies the situation. A final note regarding Firewire connections--it's usually safest to connect your devices BEFORE powering up, unless the device manufacturer specifies otherwise.
