Sony NEX-FS100U Camcorder

The NEX-FS100 is a tapeless camcorder built around Sony's Super 35mm sensor equivalent in size to Super35mm film like that used in Sony PMW-F3 camcorders. With an interchangable Sony E-mount 18 to 200mm zoom lens the FS100 was developed specifically as a handheld digital motion camcorder capable of producing high-quality, shallow depth-of-field footage similar to that of film cameras.

Here are some of the camera's many features:

The large CMOS sensor (also available in the PMW-F3L camcorder) is equivalent in size to Super35mm film. This large sensor is capable of creating a rich bokeh effect (i.e. beautifully defocused images) for the much-desired shallow-focus look generally associated with national commercials and feature films. The sensor also has the optimum number of effective pixels for shooting Hi-Def moving images. Outstanding exposure latitude delivers extraordinarily subtle detail and color gradation while avoiding image artifacts commonly found in DSLR's. A tape measure hook and image sensor position index on the body marks the position of the focal plane for precise focus control.

Recording images at a different frame rate from that used for playback provides the extra versatility of slow and quick motion shooting (i.e. Over & Under Cranking). The NEX-FS100 is capable of shooting Full HD (1920×1080) progressive slow and quick motion. S&Q shooting plus last scene review lets the Camera Operator check the S&Q effects on-set, immediately after shooting the scene without drilling down a long list of menus.

The compact, lightweight body with detachable grip, handle, and viewfinder tube, make it easy to configure the FS100 for a wide range of shooting situations. To facilitate hand-held shooting, the angle of the handgrip can be positioned 360 degrees, while the LCD Panel rotates for left, or right side operation. There are also numerous 1/4 and 3/8-inch screw holes on both the handle and body for mounting the camera, or attaching peripheral devices.

The large, sharp LCD viewfinder is located along the optical axis of the camera. It's 3.5-inch XtraFine screen is designed for easier, more-intuitive framing, especially during hand-held shooting. The panel can also be rotated for stress-free operation from either side of the camera. For more precise focusing, a large viewfinder tube with 1.2x magnifier is supplied to convert the LCD into a superb traditional optical viewfinder.

Simultaneous recording using SDHC memory cards and other media is possible with the FS100 for secure backup when shooting footage that can't be reshot. For extra convenience when using external recorders, the FS100's HDMI port with embedded timecode provides uncompressed 4:2:2 digital output and pull down markers.

The Sony 18 ~200mm E-mount interchangeable lens features precision-crafted optics with aspherical glass elements for compact high performance, and circular iris mechanisms for smooth background defocusing. The included lens boasts 11x zoom power, quiet AF motor for cleaner sound recording, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with an advanced 'Active' mode that enables steady handheld walking shots without the need for a bulky stabilization rig.

The NXCAM FS100 features the Sony E-mount Interchangeable lens system. In addition to a wide variety of E-mount lenses from various manufacturers like Zeiss, Tamron, Sigma and Cosina MLD FS100's also comes with a Nikon to E-mount adapter permitting virtually any 35mm lens to be mounted on the camera.
